A Hindu temple has launched a national appeal to help the victims of the earthquake in Nepal.

The Lotus Trust, the welfare arm of Bhaktivedanta Manor, in Hilfield Lane, Aldenham, is working with the Hare Krishna Temple in Khatmandu.

It is also offering food and medical relief to Bhaktivedanta Hospital in Mumbai as part of the Hare Krishna Food for Life programme.

The earthquake struck last Saturday and around 7,000 people are believed to have been killed, while 6,500 were injured and 30,000 have lost their homes as a result.

With the help of 350 Food for Life volunteers, the team from Bhaktivedanta Manor is serving 5,000 people in Khatmandu and 7,000 people in Bhaktapur with fresh meals.

Temple president Srutidharma Das said: “Today we are seeing the devastating impact of the earthquake in Nepal on the thousands of people that have lost their homes, their lives and families, and who are desperately in need.

“Even sitting thousands of miles away, we can all do something small to help – by supporting the work of The Lotus Trust, we can ensure that much needed meals and medical aid can be given to the victims locally. Please make a small contribution today.”
