People who want to celebrate the anniversary of Victory in Europe Day with a street party will not have to pay a road closure charge.

Hertfordshire County Council is waiving the normal road closure fees for community events for people living in the area, including Watford, Borehamwood, St Albans and Potters Bar.

Communities have come together to celebrate previous anniversaries and May 8, 2015 marks 70 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Teresa Heritage, cabinet member for localism, said: “We want to make it as easy as possible for residents to organise local events, which is why we’ve decided to waive the fees for street parties to celebrate this important national anniversary.

“Street parties are a fantastic way of bringing communities together and it's really straightforward to apply.

“Our county has an enviable reputation in this regard, with Hertfordshire crowned the street party capital of the whole country for both the royal wedding in 2011 and the Queen’s Jubilee in 2012, and we hope that this move will help bring the people of Hertfordshire together again.”

The closing date for applications is April 20, 2015. For more information, visit www.hertsdirect.org/streetparties
