Eyes will be on the skies this morning to view the rare sight of a solar eclipse.

Thousands of stargazers from across North London will flock to vantage points this morning as a solar eclipse plunges the capital into darkness for more than two hours.

The moon will first begin to move in front of the sun at 8.25am and the eclipse will be at its maximum at around 9.31am, finishing at 10.41am.

This is the last total solar eclipse in Europe for more than a decade, with the next total solar eclipse not visible in the UK until 2090.

However The College of Optometrists has warned that inadvertently glancing at the sun can lead to burns at the back of eye and experts advise viewing the event indirectly.

The North London Times and Independent Series has compiled a list of the five places readers can view the rare event:

  1. Aberford Park, Borehamwood
  2. Alexandra Palace, Haringey
  3. Winchmore Hill, Enfield
  4. Grove Open Space, Harrow on the Hill
  5. Victoria Park, Finchley
