A pub that campaigners tried to save will be turned into a Sainsbury’s supermarket.

The Crown Pub, in Shenley Road, Borehamwood, closed its doors in March 2013 after the firm who ran it went bust.

But after builders began working on the site last month, there was much speculation as to what it was going to become.

Supermarket giant Sainsbury’s have since confirmed they are working with developers to open a small ‘local’ store on the site.

The news will come as a disappointment to Save the Crown, a group of people who fought to get the watering hole listed as a community asset.

Around 34 people initially won a campaign to have the pub listed as an asset of community value, which would have given community groups the chance to buy the pub themselves.

But after an appeal from owners Woodhall LLP, Hertsmere Borough Council changed its mind, saying the pub did not meet the legal requirements.
