Police have teamed up with a professional football club to help make young people better citizens as well as footballers.

In a scheme launched yesterday, Barnet FC, based at The Hive, in Camrose Avenue, Edgware, will be proving coaches after school and on Saturdays as part of the ‘football in the community’ program.

Police officers and staff will be present at every session possible to give the teenagers an opportunity to talk about their personal concerns as a group or on a one to one basis.

Officers will also give occasional short presentations to the students when there is a subject of concern.

The scheme aims to get young people off the streets and away from gang culture.

Organisers also hope it will promote team work and self esteem, as well as making those who take part better football players.

Harrow Borough Commander Simon Ovens said: "This scheme is an excellent opportunity to reach out to the youth of Harrow. It is open to everyone, offering both male and female sessions.

“We will not only improve their fitness and football ability, but offer crime prevention and safety advice. We will be creating new friendships and trust within our communities.

“I fully support this project and look forward to its success, helping make Harrow the Safest Borough in London."

Dates of future sessions will be published in due course.
