Children joined forces with a “remarkable” Paralympic hero who helped them raise money for charity.

Pupils from Parkside Community Primary School, in Borehamwood, met Derek Derenelagi, a discus thrower who competed in the 2012 games.

He had his legs amputated in July 2007 after he was on tour with the British army in Afghanistan, but has gone on to become a champion athlete.

Determined to do something to support Mr Derenelagi with his training, pupils took part in a sponsored walk on the grounds of the school last Friday.

Coaches from Arsenal Football Club also came along to support the walk.

Money raised will go towards Mr Derenelagi’s training for the 2016 Paralympics.

Bill, a year six pupil, said: “It was a good afternoon. As well as walking round the school we had lots of different activities.

“I liked 'beat the goalie' best. Coaches from Arsenal came along. I scored two goals.”

They raised a total of £2,518 for the walk – with year five pupil Lily raising the most at £276.

She said: “It was really nice to help Derek raise some money since he lost his legs in Afghanistan and I enjoyed the sponsored walk and getting to see him.

“I got a picture taken with him and I am glad that I raised a lot of money for him and wish I could do it again sometime.”

Headteacher Julie Muncey added: “This is a staggering amount of money raised by the children and parents at the school, and demonstrates just how proud we all are of Derek's achievements.

“We were delighted to be able to help in a small way, to support Derek in his ambition to achieve gold at the World Championships and The Paralympics.

“He is a remarkable, determined and modest man and we are very pleased that Parkside School has such strong affiliations with him.

“We all wish him lots of luck.”
