Hertsmere council staff were taught how to spot the signs of someone being drawn into terrorism.

More than 60 Hertsmere Borough Council officers attended the event at the civic offices in Elstree Way on Friday.

It focused on safeguarding and highlighted the vulnerabilities that could render someone susceptible to radicalisation.

Detective Constable Emma Maxwell from the Hertfordshire Prevent Team said: "These training sessions form part of 'PREVENT', which is the UK's counter-terrorism strategy. It's invaluable to have the opportunity to spend time with staff who have such regular, day-to-day contact with members of the community."

The authority’s chief executive, Donald Graham, opened the training session and said: "Everyone has a role to play in ensuring Hertsmere remains a safe place.

"Our workforce is in regular contact with members of the local community so it's important that we know the signs to look out for and how to raise concerns.

“This was a very useful session which included some helpful case studies showing how a range of agencies can work together to address concerns."
