Cyclists who have outgrown their bikes can swap it for a better model while helping young people at a special event.

The Borehamwood Safer Neighbourhood Team has joined forces with Halfords to help people in the area get cycling.

The Bicycle Swap Shop is being held at Halfords car park, in Theobold Street, Borehamwood, between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, January 31.

Young people can bring their old bikes to be fixed and serviced free of charge.

People are also being asked to donate old bikes which they no longer use, or which may need repair, to be donated to a child in the town to encourage them to get cycling.

Subject to donations on the day, young people may be able to bring along an old bike which they have grown out of and have it replaced with a bigger bike.

PCSO Samantha O’Grady from the Borehamwood Safer Neighbourhood Team set up the scheme. She said: “This activity is just the start of a wider project in Borehamwood to encourage people to get cycling.

“My colleagues and I have been specially trained to deliver cycling proficiency training and tests and we will be holding events during the spring and summer. We hope these events will divert young people from negative behaviour and encourage them to get healthier and more active, and cycle to school. We’ll also be signing up young people to these events at the swap shop.”
