A driver was assaulted after an argument at a busy junction in Radlett.
Police were called to Watling Street at 7.30am on Wednesday after a man got out of his vehicle and assaulted another driver.
Officers said the pair had been in a "verbal altercation" before a man got out of his vehicle, opened the door of another car and assaulted the driver.
He then got back into his vehicle and drove off.
The victim was not injured.
PC Paul Francis, who is investigating, said: "The incident occurred at a busy junction, at a busy time of day so there would have been a lot of traffic around at the time.
"I am appealing for anyone who was in the area and saw what happened to contact me as soon as possible."
Police are appealing for witnesses after the assault and said the two cars involved in the incident were a white Volkswagen Golf and a white box van.
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact PC Francis via the Hertfordshire Constabulary non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference J1/15/165.
Alternatively call Crimestoppers, the independent charity, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
