Sheer stubbornness and being strong-minded are the key to living a long and healthy life, according to one centenarian.

Josephine Malarkey, who lives in Heath House care home in Bushey Heath, was treated to a surprise party that included a special appearance from Mayor of Hertsmere Councillor Carey Keates.

Seventeen members of Ms Malarkey's family and all her friends turned up to wish her a happy birthday last week, which she described as "simply amazing."

Mrs Malarkey, who was born in Sunderland and lived in Borehamwood before moving to Bushey Heath, said: "I felt high profile and surprised at being handed a birthday card from a Queen's representative."

"I was delighted. I'm so proud of all my good looking family."

Bakery chain Greggs, which has its roots in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, sent over a specially made birthday cake for Ms Malarkey.

The mother-of-two grew up in Briery Vale Road, Ashbrooke in Sunderland and lived there for the majority of her young life, marrying her late husband John Malarkey at age 23.

When asked about key moments in her life, apart from her wedding day, Mrs Malarkey talked about having her children. She said: "When I had my first child it was a relief as I was enormous. I couldn't even get the belt of my coat around me."

She also spoke about a gold brooch she was awarded for donating 50 pints of blood.

Mrs Malarkey's daughter, Joyce Malarkey, 76, said: "The day went really well. Everything ran smoothly and we had a great time. It was just amazing that everybody came and to see how happy she was.

"I want to thank everyone for getting together and making it a tremendous day for her.

"She is now looking forward to seeing her grand-daughter and six-year-old great grand-daughter, who she hasn't met yet, when they come over from Majorca in February."
