Motorists fear that new welcome signs commemorating a centenary of filmmaking will cause a crash.

One new sign welcoming drivers into Elstree and Borehamwood has come under fire after neighbours claim it obstructs the view up a hill and is likely to cause a serious accident.

The sign, which is one of eight at gateway points into Borehamwood, is located on a grass verge where motorists say it blocks the view when turning right from Stapleton Road into Green Street.

Craig Read, of Aycliffe Road, Borehamwood, contacted the Borehamwood Times with his concerns.

He said: “This sign obscures the view of oncoming traffic from the right as you exit onto Green Street - in my opinion, it is an accident waiting to happen. The council should move it further to the right.”

Mr Fenner, of Stapleton Road, said: “Somebody’s going to get killed there. There’s no doubt about it because it blocks your view completely.”

Others expressed their concern through social media, with one user urging drivers to report the issue to the council before someone is killed.

The new signs, which were installed last week, were organised by Hertfordshire County Council and Elstree Screen Heritage.

They were unveiled in a ceremony last Monday, and aim to remind visitors about the town’s 100 years of film and television production.

A spokesman from Hertfordshire County Council said: “The new 'Welcome to Borehamwood' sign is in the same location as the previous one which was there for a number of years.

“Highways officers will visit the site and look at potential sight obstruction issues in more detail.”

The council added that anyone who believes this sign to cause a danger should report it online.
