Motorists and road users could be given more opportunities to shape decisions on the county's roads.

Hertfordshire County Council is reviewing how often it holds highways liaison meetings.

The meetings are currently held twice a year, after the previous three-monthly schedule was dropped last year.

But after pressure from councils including Hertsmere Borough Council, the new arrangements are being reviewed to allow motorists to launch petitions or scrutinise decisions.

Cllr Jean Heywood, who is responsible for transport, said: "I'm pleased that the county council has confirmed that they will review this matter through the topic group, as I'd raised a number of concerns about the new arrangements when they were first proposed.

“It's our view that, under this new structure, there is insufficient opportunity for our constituents to present petitions to the relevant local councillors and for highways expenditure to be scrutinised.

"We also think that local councillors need to be kept better informed of what action is being taken in their area regarding highways decisions and spending so that we can respond more effectively when residents raise issues with us.”

The council has suggested the meetings should be supplemented by informal meetings of ward councillors and highways officers at least twice a year, where borough councillors could report issues.
