Care home tenants now pull themselves a pint in a new pop up pub.

Designed to help those living with dementia, this backdrop brings the familiar surroundings of a wooden bar to residents at Forest Care Village in Cardinal Avenue, Borehamwood.

The pop-up pub is known as a ‘Rempod’ - a mobile display unit intended to replicate familiar spaces within care homes.

The public house backdrop is one of two in use at Forest Care Village – the other shows a retro living room, complete with a fully functioning 1950s-style television, radio and mantelpiece clock.

Centre manager Wendy Lawther said: “When you are working with people with dementia, the modern world can be a confusing place due to short term memory loss.

“Yet with their long-term memories still intact, creating environments from their earlier lives which remind them of good times and feel familiar is a great way of helping to reduce anxiety and agitation.

“We already have one reminiscence room in the home, but this enables residents to make use of other parts of the care centre by providing a ‘grounding’ backdrop that provides familiarity in a new space.”
