An anti-crime campaigner has warned people to remain vigilant after a series of distraction burglaries.

Police officers are investigating 35 thefts targeting old people across the South East since August - and believe each incident was carried out by the same group of three or four burglars.

One elderly victim in Barnet was targeted on September 24 by a man claiming to be a police officer.

After being allowed into the house, he asked the victim questions about whether she lived alone, and what security she had.

He left after she pointed to a CCTV camera in the hallway, and nothing was taken.

Detectives have released three images of men they would like to speak to in connection with the incidents, as well a photo of a car they believe has been seen at the scene of some of the crimes.

The car, a silver Audi A3 sport, is believed to have used a few different cloned number plates.

Borehamwood Times:

Richard Jarvis, of Hartforde Road, Borehamwood, is the district co-ordinator of Hertsmere Neighbourhood Watch.

He travels around Hertfordshire and north Barnet, informing people how to stay safe.

Mr Jarvis said: “Distraction burglars people always prey on elderly and vulnerable people. They really are the scum of the earth.

“I have been told there are very few distraction burglaries, but as far as I see it, one is too many. I have seen victims of this, and it leaves them distraught. It’s a real psychological thing, worse than any domestic burglary. None of them are good, don’t get me wrong, and the damage it does is awful.”

Mr Jarvis, who lives in Hartforde Road, Borehamwood, also gave his advice on how to avoid falling victim to a distraction burglary.

He said: “You really cannot trust everybody. If you aren’t expecting anybody, don’t open the door. They take so many guises, it’s unbelievable. If there’s someone there, and they won’t go away, phone 999."

Anyone with information is urged to call 101.
