April was a month of angry motorists, with parking changes and poor road conditions featuring on most front pages.

Disgruntled drivers gave an overwhelming thumbs down to two-hour parking restrictions brought in at Borehamwood Shopping Park.

Hundreds vowed to boycott the shopping centre after the new limit was introduced at the Jones LaSalle-owned car park. The company said it had only been put in place for a trial period.

Flagship retailer Debenhams, which opened in the centre in October, said it had not been consulted over the new restrictions and demanded owners gave their reasons behind the decision.

Councillor Sandra Parnell said: “It shows they are listening to the residents. We want to shop in our retail park and don’t want to have to go anywhere else.”

The restrictions were later reversed.

Motorists were also up in arms over the state of the roads in Borehamwood, after the crumbling roundabout at Deacons Hill was not repaired despite fears that someone would be killed.

Antony Gee, 48, who walked past the roundabout everyday on his way to work and said: “Cars go flying over the roundabout at such a speed, it’s quite alarming.

“The fear is that this dangerous situation could cause a huge crash.”

Meanwhile, some drivers had taken it upon themselves to draw rings around potholes “as big as craters” along Aycliffe Road.

Health issues also featured this month, after 61-year-old Sue Elsie was left waiting 40 minutes for an ambulance during a suspected heart attack.

She said: “With every minute that went past and the ambulance still hadn’t arrived I thought I was going to die. It was a terrifying feeling.”
