An Olympian and world champion swimmer gave his support to a budding swimming team at the weekend.

Five-time Olympian and eight-time world record holder Mark Foster attended the Hertsmere Flyers Club Championships on Saturday where he hosted a question and answer session with competitors and handed out prizes.

The event, held at The Venue, off Elstree Way in Borehamwood, was officially supported by England's governing body for swimming, the ASA, and involved around 50 swimmers from the club.

Children aged nine to 16 took part in the event, which included competitions in the 50m, 100m and 200m distances, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and individual medley.

Mr Foster said: "Engaging with and encouraging youngsters involved in swimming has always been very important to me.

“It's great to see so many young people competing at such a high level and really enjoying the sport."

"Sport starts at grass roots and it's vital that there are great local clubs like Hertsmere Flyers that offer excellent coaching and support for those starting out - these young swimmers could be the Olympic and world champions of the future."

Mr Foster's visit was part of a push from the club to develop the next generation of swimmers who could compete for county and national podium places.

Along with the visit, the club has also recently appointed a new coach, Wayne Owide - a triathlon coach and swimming specialist who focuses on improving stroke technique, overall fitness and mental stamina.

He said: "Having such an iconic figure like Mark come to the club and offer his support and guidance is a real inspiration for our members.

“Mark will have started at club level, so it is great that the youngsters can see what can be achieved if they train hard."
