Motorists in Borehamwood and Potters Bar are being warned not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the festive season.

Throughout December, the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit will be out in force conducting an increased number of drink and drug driving checks.

Officers will also be carrying out breath tests and, where relevant, field impairment tests on all drivers involved in road collisions they attend.

The unit’s chief inspector Richard Hann said: “Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs dramatically increases your chances of being involved in a collision that results in someone’s death or injury.

“My officers will be conducting increased numbers of checks during December, so if you do drink and drive, there is a strong chance that you will be caught and prosecuted.”

Hertfordshire police and crime commissioner David Lloyd added: “While I hope everyone enjoys the festive season, it is important we don’t forget the legal and moral responsibilities we still have for our own safety and that of others."

Officers are urging people to report drivers they suspect are drink driving using confidential 24-hour reporting line 01707 354111 or at the force's website.
