A family-run charity hopes to raise thousands of pounds at its annual supper quiz night.

Members of the Louise Gergel Fellowship are to host their annual quiz fundraiser this month.

The charity was set up in memory of wife, mother and daughter Louise, who grew up in Elstree and died suddenly at the age of 32 from Hughes Syndrome.

Hughes Syndrome causes blood to become ‘sticky’ and unable to flow through the body properly. It is one of the most common reasons behind the deaths of young people from strokes – along with being one of the main reasons for recurrent miscarriages.

However awareness among many doctors, particularly general practitioners, is low and people with Hughes Syndrome are often not diagnosed quickly or treated properly.

After Louise’s sudden death, her close family decided to raise funds for research into Hughes Syndrome and also to try to raise awareness so that more people could be diagnosed and treated quickly and efficiently.

A committee of nearly twenty people, the fellowship have now raised more than £300,000 since it was formed ten years ago, hoping to add thousands of pounds to the total after this year’s annual quiz.

Mum Linda Wolffe said: “We are Louise’s close family and friends – my husband and me, our daughters, Louise’s grandfather, Louise’s parents-in-law and sister-in-law and brother-in-law amongst us.

“We usually raise at least £6,000 to £7,000 at this event and it is always great fun and a social as well as a fundraising success.

Louise lived all her life in Elstree before her marriage to husband Laurence, and then lived in Golders Green and Hendon until she died.

The quiz will be held from 7.15pm on Sunday, November 30 at Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue, in Croxdale Road.

Tickets cost £25 and can be purchased by contacting John on 020 8203 3206 or Eric on 020 8954 6317.
