Almost 1,000 fixed penalty notices were issued for driving offences last year.

Road safety charity Brake released the figures as it launched Road Safety Week.

In both Radlett and Borehamwood, a total of 915 fixed penalty notices were issued to drivers, with 14 of those of careless driving and 901 for speed-related issues.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive at Brake, said: "When drivers use roads without care for others the consequences can be tragic and horrific – people killed and badly injured, lives ruined forever, because of a moment of impatience or selfishness.

“Ultimately, we're all just human beings trying to get around, with equal right to use the roads, not competing tribes."

Figures relate to the home address of the offender, not the location where the offence occurred.

Almost one million fixed penalty notices were issued nationally for these offences in 2013, with 950,505 of those for speeding and 17,483 for careless driving.

Hertfordshire police and crime commissioner David Lloyd said: “I have been committed to tackling speeding and anti-social drivers in the county since I was first elected commissioner and I wholeheartedly support Brake’s campaign.

“It’s not just motorists that use the road – by using public transport, riding a bike or simply as a pedestrian crossing the road, we all use the roads in one way or another. With so many people at risk of greater harm if someone speeds or drives carelessly, it is vital that we look out for each other on the roads.”
