A number of grants were allocated to community groups at a council meeting this evening.

Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council met at the council chamber in the Civic Offices, Borehamwood, to discuss five submissions for community grants.

Councillors voted in favour of allocating £750 to the Hertsmere Academy of Dance and Performing Arts, which will be used to offset increased costs of hiring the Ark Theatre, in Thrift Farm Lane. They also recommended the group review its fees.

A further £150 was approved for the Elstree and Borehamwood Residents Association, along with a fee waiver of £360 for space in upcoming editions of the council's Town Crier magazine.

The Borehamwood and District Garden Crafts Society received £302.90 for the costs of printed banners and flyers, while Elstree Screen Heritage was approved funding of £1,600 for the sponsorship of new panels and for signage.

Each grant was unanimously approved by all councillors.

However, a request for £500 from the Borehamwood Athletic Club is still pending, as the town council has deferred the decision.

Council clerk Huw Jones said: "Recommendations have been submitted to the club’s secretary and we await her responses to those suggestions."

During the full council meeting, councillors also heard updates from a number of outside bodies, including Hertsmere Mencap and the Community History Project, which will in future be known under the Elstree and Borehamwood Museum.

Cllr Richard Butler detailed his visit to the French town town of Fontenay-aux-Roses for Remembrance Day, where he laid wreaths on behalf of the town council and the Borhamwood and Elstree Twin Town Association.

He said: "It was a really good time and I would like to pass on their thanks and best wishes."

The council also heard that plans for the development of the Hertswood Academy had been submitted to Hertsmere Borough Council on November 6, along with hearing updates on the future of Maxwell Park Community Centre under the Elstree Way corridor plans.

Councillors also heard an update from the Youth Council chairman.
