A sports club has hit hurdles in its bid to pay for the marshalling of its annual fun run.

Borehamwood Athletic Club is currently seeking volunteers to help run its annual 10K race and family fun run, after its funding was cut by the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council.

The club warned its future was at stake if it could not stage the event, which subsidises many of its other activities.

At a town council meeting held last night, it was disclosed that the club's application for a community grant of £500 is still pending as it did not submit the required financial statements or the rules of the organisation.

The grant application will be extended until a full council meeting on May 13, 2015, in order to give the club more time to provide these documents.

Councillors also agreed that the council would also advise the club on producing the required documents if needed, and also to approach up to ten of their own stewards for contact details to be passed on to the club.

This would allow the athletic club to stage the race with the required number of marshals, while passing responsibility to the club – rather than the town council.

A town council spokesman said: “The town council has considered the position of Borehamwood Athletic Club and has put forward a set of generous and helpful options for the club to look at to try to resolve any outstanding difficulties.

“As a holder of the public purse, the council must demonstrate that it understands the club’s finances and rules before it can release money to help it.

“The council wants to enter into a positive dialogue to see how it can give good advice and help the club to obtain marshals for the 10K and fun run in the summer and even the money to pay for them if there is a solid business case to do so.”

A number of volunteers from the community have already come forward and put their names down to help out, should the 10K race and fun run go ahead next summer.
