Members of an athletic club will find out next week if they will receive extra funding.

Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council will meet next week to consider requests for community grants for groups and organisations in the town.

A request for £500 has been submitted by the Borehamwood Athletic Club, who are currently on the look-out for people to volunteer their time as marshals for the annual 10k race and fun run in 2015.

Without additional money and support, next year’s race could be cancelled which would mean the club – which relies on sponsorship money raised through the annual event – would be forced to close.

A number of volunteers have already come forward, however organiser Pauline Poole is keen to generate more support.

She said: “We need people to put their names down to volunteer on the day next year – that’s the main thing we need, people to marshal the race.

“It is something the whole town enjoys so it would be a shame to see it forced to stop.”

The extra money requested from the town council will be used to pay for marshalls if more volunteers do not come forward.

A spokesman for the town council said: “The Town Council is considering a number of Community Grant applications at Full Council on 14 November, including one submitted recently for £500 by Borehamwood Athletic Club.

“Grant applications should be supported by financial statements and the constitution or regulations of the organisation seeking funding together with a cogent business case for making the award.

“All applications are considered on their merits and the Council considers also how it can provide assistance to local organisations of a non-financial nature, such as by advising these bodies or by referring them to other sources of advice or funding.”

Town councillors will meet at the civic offices, in Borehamwood, at 7.30pm next Wednesday, November 12.
