Hertfordshire Constabulary is taking part in a national drive to rid the streets of firearms.
Hertfordshire will be holding its first firearms amnesty since 2003 as part of Operation Calibre between November 10 and 21, when the public will be urged to surrender any firearms in their possession to the police.
Hertfordshire has little gun crime, but recent changes to the law could mean that some gun owners may now be unaware that they are unknowingly in possession of an illegal firearm.
To get rid of an unwanted firearm, or for information on how to apply for the required certificate, contact the police on 01707 806126 or email BedsandHertsFLU@herts.pnn.police.uk during the amnesty.
Hertfordshire police and crime commissioner David Lloyd said: “I’m delighted that we are playing our part in this national campaign to reduce the number of firearms in the county, which will make Hertfordshire and neighbouring counties safer by reducing the number of guns held privately.
“Fortunately there is little gun-related crime in the county, but as part of the wider crime prevention and reduction campaigns we run in Hertfordshire, this can only contribute to making the county safer and continue to keep this type of crime low.”
