An athletics club says support is all it needs to keep a summer fun run going.

The Borehamwood Athletics Club feared closure when the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council voted not to continue funding the club’s 10K race and fun run.

However organisers are working hard to find volunteers to marshall the race, and say a number of individuals have come forward already.

Dene Lewis, 31, attended the club for a few years around the age of ten and says it was an important part of his life growing up.

He said: “It gave me a great founding and so much great experience. Pauline was brilliant and was so supportive of everyone who went to the club.

“We always got to try new things and she always gave everyone a good time, as well as pushing us to the best of our abilities but still making sure no one was left behind.

“I know many other people who had the same experience as me, and really benefited from being a part of it. I’m sure people will remember the fun they had there and will want to get involved.”

As Mr Lewis pledges his support to the event, the club is hoping more people will volunteer.

Organiser Pauline Poole said: “Everyone’s help will be so appreciated by the club and all those who take part in the 10K run. We just need people to put on a yellow bib and donate a bit of their time on the day.”

It takes Ms Poole 13 months to organise the event, so time is already counting down to next summer's race.

She added: “I just need to know if we can get that support on the day to marshall the race and keep it going. If people could come forward now, it would help so much.”
