A teenager raced with a broken leg to raise money for the Michael Green Foundation.

Joel Carlowe, 15, took part in his school's annual cross country race at Aldenham Country Park, on Thursday last week, completing the one and a half mile race in 50 minutes on his crutches.

Joel, who goes to the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boy’s School, broke his leg while playing rugby and said: "The race went well. When I finished there was a guard of honour and I felt a great sense of achievment. And with all the cheering at the end, I almost forgot how sore my hands were."

Joel's father Richard was with his son throughout the race, helping him to the finish line.

He said: "I am very proud of Joel. He did really well, he was stuggling at one point, but he kept on going."

Joel chose to take part in the race to raise awareness of Type 2 diabetes and raised £550 for the Michael Green Foundation.

He said: "Michael Green was my dad's best friend, who died from a silent heart attack, which is related to having diabetes.

"I have been to a few events by the charity and I felt quite strongly about it, and emotional, and wanted to do something for them. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me.

"This is the first charity thing I have done by myself and I would definitely do something again in the future. But my aim now is to get off the crutches."
