An army cadet force is hoping to give more young people the chance to “achieve and be inspired”.

Borehamwood Army Cadets, which meets in Rossington Avenue, Borehamwood, is on the lookout for new members aged 12 to 18.

Having opened in 2009, the detachment has aimed to produce the "best" cadets in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

Staff Sergeant Daniel Marshallsay, 24, who joined as a cadet when he was 12, said: “Cadets is not just about running about on a field. I do believe that every young person should be given a chance to achieve and be inspired, and at Borehamwood Army Cadets we can provide the tools to inspire individuals to achieve great things."

The detachment meets twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7.15pm to 9.30pm and provides a range of activities including weapons training and shooting.

As well as giving the opportunity for cadets to enhance their mental capabilities through BTEC qualifications in public services, music and first aid, the group also goes on regular trips.

Mr Marshallsay added: " If I didn't have cadets I do not know what I would have done. Cadets has made me the person I am today and for that I thank army cadet force. I recommend the cadets to any young person, male or female, to join and push themselves to do something useful with their evenings."

This year, Max Fuller, 18, was named the top army cadet in the country after dedicating a full six years of service to the Borehamwood detachment.

The group gives teenagers the chance to visit different army barracks and meet others who live in the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire ACF areas.

Alongside the British Royal Legion, the force also takes part in the annual Festival of Remembrance weekend by selling poppies to help raise money and celebrate war heroes.
