Hertfordshire Constabulary marked Older People’s Day today by issuing advice about crimes targeting the elderly.

The day helps raise awareness about issues faced by older people across the UK and police are asking everyone to help share crime prevention advice with their older relatives, friends and neighbours so that they may avoid becoming a victim.

Phone scams continue to be prevalent across the county, with the elderly being persistently targeted by the fraudsters who pretend to be police officers or bank officials.

Detective Inspector Jason Keane, who leads the county’s response to phone scams, said: “Older People’s Day is a great opportunity to take some time and speak with older relatives, friends and neighbours to make them aware of phone scams, which do sadly tend to target the elderly, and share our advice on how to handle an unexpected telephone call.

“By doing this people can prevent others from falling victim to this potentially devastating crime.”

Another crime that preys on people’s good nature and trust is distraction burglary, which is where a person will gain access to your property under false pretenses and attempt to distract you while they or someone else carry out a burglary.

Detective Inspector Ben Wright who leads a dedicated team of officers who investigate distraction burglaries and other doorstep crime, said: “Door step crime can be hugely invasive and distressing for the victim and their family.

“Older People’s Day is the perfect time to think of the older people in your life and ensure they know what to do should someone unexpectedly knock on their door.”
