Hundreds of people across the town took tea and a slice to raise money for charity.

Cake lovers across Borehamwood ventured out on Friday to take part in the many Macmillan Cancer Support coffee mornings held in the town.

In 2013, the charity received a total of £20,532,000 in donations from the nationwide coffee mornings and it hopes to beat the target this year.

A total of £656.53 was raised at the morning hosted by the Visually Impaired Club, which included demonstrations of the activities that the club organises for its membership.

Their event was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Hertsmere Councillor Martin Worster along with town mayor Cllr Pat Strack.

A care home also joined in with the fundraising, with several cakes on sale at Sunrise Senior Living, in Edgwarebury Lane, raising £72 for the charity.

Sally Fishwick, activities and volunteer co-ordinator, said: “Our residents loved the opportunity to come together with friends to have a chat over coffee. Raising money for Macmillan is close to the hearts of many of our residents."

PCSO Sam O'Grady hosted an event in Aberford Hall and another took place at Organ Hall, raising £310.

All money raised will be passed to Macmillan to support cancer patients from diagnosis onwards.

A further £141.40 was raised by Alium Medical, which hosted it coffee morning in Delta Court to encourage other businesses to be more proactive with charity work.

CEO Nadia Whittley said: "It helped not only raise money for this very important charity but also helped bring our local community closer: many people from neighbour companies joined us and donated generously which was wonderful to see.

"The success of this event was made possible by the enthusiasm and commitment of our own Alium Medical bakers. The variety of  cakes from brownies to Continental tarts and much more  promises to make the next event something you don’t want to miss."
