Passengers have continued to express their anger after Network Rail have refused to commit to an end date to work being carried out at a busy commuter station.

Regular users of the Elstree and Borehamwood railway station, off Station Road, are still unable to use the new lifts and bridge – despite claims that there is no one working on them.

The new lifts were due to be completed in the spring, but the completion dates has been delayed several times and many users of the service believe not enough is being done to finish the job.

Marlene Winston, who lives near the station, said: “The work appears to be finished yet remains closed for use to the public. Every time I enquire when the bridge and lifts will be operable no-one knows.

“This has gone on for so long and I remain frustrated. I travel a lot and being 71 years old and fit always dread the return journey entailing going up the stairs and coming down at the station with luggage.”

Another Borehamwood resident, Johnny Messias, was told by station staff this week that a delegation from Network Rail assessed the site two weeks ago and decided that the lifts were not ready to be signed off.

He said: “We still cannot get to the bottom of who is responsible for signing off the work, which means the delays go on, and on.

“It would be great if they supplied an estimate of time for remaining work and when they expect it to be done.”

A twitter account, @Openourbridge, has now been created that is dedicated to finding out when the bridge and lifts will be opened, and plans to contact both Network Rail and Govia Thameslink at 9am, 12pm and 5pm each day to gain more information.

A spokesman for Thameslink said: ““We share our passengers’ frustration that a final completion date has not yet been identified, however we are finalising arrangements with Network Rail, who are delivering the scheme, to shortly allow our passengers to use the lifts and new footbridge.

“We would like to thank people for their patience and are positive that they will be delighted with the facilities once they are open.”

Additional safety works to both the lifts and the bridge are currently being carried out before the work can be signed off and put into use.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “We are working hard and hope to finalise arrangements with Govia Thameslink Railway to bring these new facilities into use as soon as we can.

“We understand this is frustrating and thank passengers for their continued patience throughout this project. Once the bridge and lifts are open, this will make the station more accessible for everyone in Elstree and Borehamwood.”

Neither Network Rail nor Thameslink have been able to provide an estimated date for the completion of the work.
