A primary school has been awarded a silver award for its commitment to sport.

St Nicholas School, in St Nicholas Close, Elstree, has been awarded the silver award from the government-led school games mark scheme, which was set up in 2012.

The Sainsbury's School Games Mark rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and presents the awards according to gold, silver and bronze levels.

The primary school was awarded the silver mark for its increased opportunities for pupils to take part in sports, allowing pupils to make decisions on the school’s sports council and developing sport among younger pupils through a play leader scheme.

Headteacher Kate Johnston-Grant said that staff and pupils were very pleased to have their hard work recognised by the scheme.

She added: “We are aiming for gold through greater involvement of our Sports council and increasing opportunities for extracurricular sport at lunch time and after school, such as Game On lunch club, Queens’s school after school club and our school led Change for life club.”
