Smokers will be given help giving up with a national ‘stop smoking’ challenge next month.

Hertfordshire County Council and Hertsmere Borough Council hope to encourage smokers to get through the 28-day quitting challenge Stoptober.

According to a recent national survey, two thirds of smokers say they want to quit but only four in ten have tried in the past year.

In Hertfordshire alone, more than 5,000 people took on the challenge and both councils are hoping even more will get involved this year.

Councillor Brenda Batten, who is responsible for health, said: “Of course quitting can be tough, but Stoptober has proved to be a great way for smokers to take their first steps towards a healthier, happier life.

“Evidence shows that if a smoker can go 28 days without a cigarette they are five times more likely to give up for good – so what are you waiting for, sign up to the challenge now to stop smoking this October, and possibly forever.”
