An 87-year-old died after a fall only a short distance from her home, an inquest heard today..

Joan Leighton, who had lived in Croxdale Road with her husband Henry for the past 62 years, died on February 13 following a fall.

Ambulance services were called by neighbours after a motorist found Mrs Leighton on the ground just five doors away from her home.

She was taken to Barnet Hospital, and later transferred to the Royal London where she received treatment for a cut to the back of her head.

Later CT scans showed the avid Arsenal fan had suffered from a haemorrhage from the fall, and she later showed reduced signs of consciousness.

After not responding to treatment, the former cook died on February 13. The cause of death was cited as pneumonia and a haemorrhage.

Coroner Edward Thomas concluded her death was accidental at an inquest held at Hatfield Coroners' Court this afternoon.

He said: "She had obviously, up to that time, had so much enjoyment in life. To hear someone of 87 watching the football results and doing all those things ... what a lovely lady."
