A Hertfordshire archive group will focus on the First World War in their latest event.

The Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies event 'When the Men Marched Away' will be held on Saturday, September 13 at the Register Office Block at County Hall in Hertford, between 10am and 4pm.

Having looked at family history in the last event, the emphasis now changes to some of the social aspects of life across Hertfordshire during the conflict which began 100 years ago.

Speakers will include Sarah Lloyd from the University of Hertfordshire, Maggy Douglas and Barry Bateman of St Albans Arch and Arch Soc, Emma White and David Stead.

Frances Button, cabinet member for libraries, said: "There has been a lot of attention over the last few weeks on the military aspects of the First World War. This event looks closer to home, at life here in Hertfordshire during the conflict.

"Hertfordshire Archives has a wealth of expertise and material which can help family and local historians with their research."

Entrance to the event will be £10 and booking is essential and can be done via telephone on 0300 1234049 or email at hertsdirect@hertfordshire.gov.uk .
