A concerned passenger has spent more than £500 of his own money to try to save Borehamwood’s buses.

Hertfordshire County Council has recently launched a consultation on proposals to cut subsidies for buses across the county.

Routes 306, B3 and the 658 could all have funding cut from services after 6.30pm on weekdays and on Sundays.

But Lawrence Stack, a regular passenger on the 306 bus to Watford, has spent more than £500 of his own money to make sure people are aware of the consultation and has taken to the streets with his campaign.

He said: “A month has been wasted already, so I decided to get out here and do the work myself. People need to know about these cuts and I’m going to make sure they do.”

Mr Stack has had a large banner printed and has set up a table outside the 96 Shenley Road community centre in Borehamwood, handing out leaflets and asking passers-by to fill in the consultation.

He told the Borehamwood Times he hopes to have around 2,000 consultations filled in before the deadline, and is well on his way after having 80 copies returned to him in one day.

Two other members of the Elstree and Borehamwood Residents Association, Suzanne Alford and Patrick O'Donnell, joined the ‘stall’ this week to round up Hertfordshire residents to sign the document.

Mr Stack added: “It’s not just Borehamwood bus users that will be affected by this, so I’m going to move around and take this stall to other places. I’ll go down to the bus stop at Tesco, in Shenley Road, and will go to the station too.

“I’m also planning to get on the buses, especially the 306, and hand out the documents on there too - so people in Bushey and Watford can get involved and stop the cuts too.”

A spokeswoman for the county council said: "We encourage everyone to have their say on our consultation about bus services that are subsidised by the county council. You can do this online at www.hertsdirect.org/busconsult . If you don't have access to the internet you can fill it in online at your local library. If you would like a paper copy please call 0300 123 4050 or email hertsdirect@hertfordshire.gov.uk"

"No decisions have been made and residents have until 8 October to respond."
