A 14-year-old from Shenley will represent Great Ormond Street Hospital in this year’s British Transplant Games.

Charles Obadiaru, of Newcome Road, Shenley, has been a patient at Great Ormond Street since he was two years old when he received treatment for prune belly syndrome with chronic renal failure, before later having a successful kidney transplant in 2007.

The Beaumont School pupil will now join the GOSH Renal Team to represent the hospital as it competes against athletes from other UK hospitals at the games, which will take place in Bolton from August 7 to 10.

Participants will take place in a variety of sports throughout the event, including swimming, football, badminton and table tennis.

Charles’s mother Delphine said: “We’re really excited to be going to the British Transplant Games this year. It’s wonderful to see Charles enjoying sport so much and we’re so proud of him.”

The British Transplant Games have been staged every year since 1978, having been held in 17 host cities including Edinburgh and Belfast.

Team managers Suzanne Collin and Suzanne Bradley said: “We’re delighted that Charles will be part of the GOSH Renal Team at the 2014 British Transplant Games. The games provide a wonderful arena to raise awareness and celebrate the life changing gift of organ donation for our transplant patients and their families. It is also a momentous opportunity to honour the donors and the donor families through whom these games are made possible.

“The British Transplant Games are equally about friendships being renewed and made amidst the host of sporting activities that our competitors will actively embark upon as they support each other to achieve their goals and aspirations for the games. Each and every member of our team is a hero and we will be cheering them all the way in Bolton.”
