An appeal to allow the construction of six new houses in Elstree has been dismissed.

The original application proposes the demolition of 42 Lodge Avenue, which will be replaced with a new house and with access to five further houses on surrounding land.

All six houses would have four bedrooms, along with habitable loft space, landscaping and car parking.

The application, which was submitted to Hertsmere Borough Council in December 2012, was refused in July last year - but developers later submitted an appeal against the decision.

A planning inspector has now reviewed the case and the appeal has been thrown out after it was found that the development would harm the area’s appearance and does not include enough car parking.

Although the inspector said the development would make an effective use of urban land and increase the housing stock, he ruled that the benefits did not outweigh the negative impact it is believed it may cause.
