A programme to encourage adults to study and learn new skills has been celebrated as a success.

Hertfordshire County Council's adult and family learning service wants to highlight the benefits of adult learning after the success of its events during national Adult Learner’s Week.

This year, the week was extended to a two-month festival during May and June and included a programme of tasters and events throughout the county.

The programme was held at Hertfordshire Development Centre, in Stevenage, which celebrated the achievements of learners and gave them an opportunity to share their experiences.

Frances Button, cabinet member for customer service, performance and libraries, said: “I was very pleased to open the learner awards ceremony and honour these learners who have worked very hard to complete their respective courses.

“Many of them have overcome huge barriers and shown tremendous courage and commitment, despite the difficulties they face. I would urge people who haven’t yet taken part to consider the benefits of learning something new.”

Last year over 13,000 people enrolled on the service's courses in Hertfordshire.
