They may not even sell real cakes, but this hasn't stopped a brother and sister reaching the final of a national fundraising competition.

Ella and Oliver Freeman, of Whetstone, set up Million Cupcakes for Grandpa in 2013 after their grandfather Michael, whose initials were MCG, died of motor neurone disease.

As much as the family loved baking and decorating cupcakes, the two children decided it would be impossible to actually make a million cakes and so set up a website to sell virtual cupcakes instead.

After raising more than £11,600 to help find a cure for the disease, their Million Cupcakes campaign has been shortlisted as one of three finalists in the JustGiving Young Fundraiser of the Year awards.

Nominations are made by members of the public and the two brother and sister have received more than 2,500.

This year, for the first time, JustGiving is giving the public the opportunity to decide the winners so the children's mother Nicole is asking for public support.

She said: “I’m very proud of them. They did brilliantly at getting in touch with people to support them, through the community and the groups and clubs they are part of.

“They have done fantastically well and it really is an amazing achievement. We didn’t know about the awards, but for them then to be nominated and reach the last three is great. Now we just need everyone to get voting for them so we can raise loads more awareness, and hopefully money, for their fantastic cause.”

Voting ends on Saturday, August 23 and finalists will be invited to the awards ceremony on Thursday, September 25.

Vote for Ella and Oliver at the JustGiving Facebook page, or visit their website to share a virtual cupcake.
