Rain could not dampen the spirits of festival goers at this year’s Families Day.

Hundreds of people flocked to Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council’s 58th annual festival in Meadow Park.

As part of the 16-day civic festival, Families Day provided entertainment including puppet shows, a falconry display and a Harry Potter roadshow as well as 60 stalls selling everything from jewellery to cuddly toys.

Families were also entertained by the Essex Dog Display team and performances from Hertsmere Performing Arts Group and K’s School of Dance.

Mayor of Borehamwood Councillor Pat Strack, said: “This is a chance for the whole community to come together – and over the years it’s something they have really valued.

“It’s also something fun for young people to do, because we already do a lot for elderly people, and it’s an opportunity for organisations to network.”

Mar Farran, co-ordinator at Home-Start, was among those taking the opportunity to speak to people.

She said: “Home-Start helps vulnerable families and the idea of us being here today is so people can learn more about what we do, and to recruit volunteers. It’s an important event because it’s probably the only chance we get to come out and speak to people – and it’s fun as well.”

Faye Laws of Elstree also had a tombola stall at Meadow Park, with all proceeds going to Eclipse Majorettes.

She said: “It’s a brilliant day out and although it’s raining, it’s all part of the fun.

“I think it’s a great way to give back to the community that’s brought me up, and it gives you a great sense of family values.”

As part of the festival, there will also be a historic walk starting at Grove Surgery at 2pm tomorrow, and Elstree and Borehamwood Synagogue will throw open its doors from 12.30pm to 2pm for a series of guided tours.

And from 1pm to 4pm, families can bring a picnic and watch a performance from Hertsmere Acoustic Band at Woodcock Hill.
