Plans for new academy unveiled at exhibition

A school is releasing its plans for a new school building in an exhibition today.

Hertswood Academy currently has two sites for its schools- the upper site located in Thrift Farm Lane, with a lower site in Cowley Hill.

Under plans for new housing, Elstree Corridor, the upper school and Ark Theatre is to be demolished to make way for more housing for Borehamwood.

The school has now released its plans to redevelop the current lower school site in order to create one school building for all 1,400 pupils, including 200 sixth form students.

An exhibition, to be held today in 96 Shenley Road, will detail Hertswood’s plans for the construction of the new building.

The three-storey school, which is to be set back from the road, is to house both school and community facilities, with the sports hall and Ark theatre to have separate access for outside school hours.

Almost all classrooms will have a view of the surrounding greenery, which has been designed according to findings that this type of view helps to stimulate brain activity and learning.

Art classrooms, amongst others, will also look into a central landscaped courtyard that will feature a number of ‘inspirational’ sculptures.

Temporary classrooms will be erected while construction work takes place, which will be site to the rear of the developments.

Planning submission is expected to be submitted this summer, while construction has been scheduled to begin in spring 2015 with a final completion date of April 2017.

The Ark Theatre is to vacate the existing building in June next year, and will be completed at the new location by December 2016, according to current plans.

The design team will be on hand during the exhibition to talk through the proposals, along with an animated ‘walk through’ presentation.

Construction companies Willmott Dixon and Bellway Homes will also be present to display their plans for housing developments at the site as part of the Elstree Corridor scheme.

The exhibition will be held today from 2pm to 8pm, in 96 Shenley Road.
