Teachers are “delighted” following their school’s recent rating as ‘good’ by Ofsted.

Inspectors visited Hertswood Academy in May and in their report published this month, raised the school's rating to the education watchdog's second highest.

Both schools, the upper site at Thrift Farm Lane and the lower site in Cowley Hill, were rated as ‘good’ in achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and finally leadership and management.

The behaviour and manners of its pupils and the sustained and improved exam results of 2013 were singled out for praise.

Also commended was the leadership of headteacher Peter Gillett and the strong support of senior leaders, governors, staff and parents.

Mr Gillett said: “The report reflects the hard work and professionalism of the whole academy community and points us well on the way to achieving outstanding status soon. We’re naturally delighted that our Ofsted report has recognised the great behaviour of our students, along with everyone’s hard work that goes into running this school.

“It’s all about hard work, which is something we have been really pushing in this school. We have students from across the whole community, as we’re not a selective school, and it’s great to see them do well and thrive.”

To further improve, the report recommends that more challenging work is set for the most able of pupils while also stating some teachers need to check student’s work more frequently and follow the set policies for teaching plans and marking.

Mr Gillett added: “We plan to continue on the path we are on, making constant improvements to all aspects of the school and school life. The school wants to focus on building students' confidence in their abilities and in their school- they are what it’s all about after all.”
