An author and illustrator marked the outbreak of the First World War with a visit to a Borehamwood school this week.

Author Hilary Robinson and illustrator Martin Impey visited Monksmead School in Hillside Avenue yesterday to showcase their new book, Where The Poppies Now Grow.

The picture book, aimed at primary school children, is written as a poem, and marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the conflict.

As part of the school’s ‘Time to Remember’ week, the pair gave a talk in assembly about their connection to the war – as both lost great uncles in the Battle of the Somme – and read from the book.

Headteacher Cath Elsley said: “Having Hilary and Martin visit will really help the children to engage in the centenary and the events of the World War. It was brilliant for them to hear the story read aloud by the author.”

Children were also involved in workshops, where they were shown how to create their own illustrations and were shown a number of artefacts from the war.

The school has decided to use the book as the basis for its art projects, which will be showcased in the Schools Art Show as part of the civic festival.

All year groups will be taking different aspects of the book to influence their art works.

Mrs Robinson said: “It’s lovely that the school have chosen our book to work on for their art projects- it’s a real honour.”

Speaking after the assembly, Mr Impey added: “The children got really involved with our talk today, which was great to see. I hope they go home and ask their family if they have any connection to the war, as that’s what this is really all about.”

At the end of the day, children were also able to buy books and were given the opportunity to get both Mrs Robinson and Mr Impey to sign them.
