A Borehamwood-based artist is helping to paint a brighter future to save the Asian elephant.

Sheara Abrahams, a costume designer and stylist, created a life-size baby elephant statue to raise money to help save the highly endangered species.

The statue is currently travelling around the UK in the 14-month Elephant Parade national tour in order to raise awareness of elephant conservation.

Mother of one Sheara, who has lived in Borehamwood for four years has worked on films such as Les Miserables and The Wolf of Wall Street.

She said: “You see news footage about elephants in Asia and the terrible things that are happening and the thought they won’t exist and there may come a time when our children won’t see one is just horrific.

“It’s important to raise awareness, but Elephant Parade’s approach to doing it in a fun and engaging way is what makes Elephant Parade special. I so passionately love what the project stands for and I really hope my elephant will raise as much money as possible for the Foundation.”

Mrs Abrahams' elephant, Razzle Dazzle, will join designs from model Claudia Schiffer and Alex Jones, forming part of the 35-strong herd.

She added: “Razzle Dazzle was definitely inspired by my work in costume but also my love of the Art Deco style. The fashion illustrations are stylised interpretations of 1920s trends and the design as a whole incorporates bold, geometric patterns also adapted from that time period. I wanted my elephant to feel glamorous and stylish, be eye-catching and conjure up a sense of that decedent era.”

The elephant is currently on display at Lakeside, with the next stop being Bromley on June 30.

All statues are now available to bid on in an online auction, with all proceeds being donated to The Asian Elephant Foundation, which supports conservation projects across the continent.
