Work at a major Elstree junction plagued by roadworks is due to resume next month.

Improvement works at the crossroads of the A411 Watford Road and Barnet Lane and the A5183 High Street and Roman Road had to be suspended in January after British Telecom encountered a problem with two high-voltage cables.

UK Power Networks will begin diverting cables on Monday, June 9 and once complete, BT will be able to restart work.

Contractors will work on the site seven days a week including some early and late shifts, which means the original programme of 26 weeks's work will now be cut down to 12.

Rob Smith, deputy director of environment, said: "We understand this is a major and busy route. Unfortunately it is inevitable that any works at this location will cause congestion which is why we have now chosen to carry out the majority of the works during the school holiday period when traffic volumes are generally lighter.

“On behalf of everyone involved I’d like to thank people for patience while the work is in progress.”

The junction is expected to be completed and reopened by the end of August.
