An appeal has been submitted to enable a shooting range to be turned into a graveyard.

The A1 Shooting Ground, situated off the A1 between Borehamwood and Barnet, applied to Hertsmere Borough Council for planning permission for the change earlier in the year.

The plans would have seen the demolition of buildings on the site, along with the construction of halls of remembrance and improved access from the A1.

Burial areas and parking for 60 cars were also included in the plans.

Hertsmere Borough Council refused the application on the basis that the development would cause significant harm to the green belt.

The council also stated that the modern design of the remembrance halls would be in conflict with the rural nature of the site and surrounding area, along with issues regarding access for pedestrians.

Owner Claudio Capaldo has now submitted an appeal against the decisions, which will be determined by written representations.

All representations must be received by the council by June 12.
