A Nigerian immigrant says he is hoping to become one of Borehamwood's first ethnic minority councillors.
Victor Eni was born in the Biafra region of Nigeria, and is standing as the Conservative candidate for Cowley Hill.
He came to Britain in 1995 and began work as a temp in Sainsburys, Elstree, where he is now one of the managers.
An event supporting his candidacy for election to Hertsmere Borough Council took place this weekend.
Speaking to in Borehamwood Times, Mr Eni said he was proud to stand as a minority councillor for Hertsmere Borough Councillor.
He added: “The Conservative Party is the only major party in Hertsmere to field ethnic and minority candidates in previous and this year's election, representing the true make-up of the local population in the borough.”
Mayor Councillor Pat Strack also added her support for a more diverse council make-up.
She said: “We need to demonstrate that we have drawn candidates from the whole community, as diverse as it is. New ideas and new faces are what this council needs, as well as the knowledge of the experienced candidates.”
