Supermarket staff and customers are to cycle a marathon for charity – in store.

Morrisons, on Stirling Way, Borehamwood, have planned a day of fun in store after manager Aytan Tuncer signed himself up for this year’s London to Brighton cycle ride.

Although he has only been cycling for two years, Aytan is looking forward to the challenge. He said: “It’s the first time I have ever done something like this, as I wanted to sign up last year but missed the opportunity. I now ride about 100 miles a week when it is good weather.”

Along with his marathon, which will go ahead on Sunday June 15, the store will also host its own fundraising event later this month staff at Morrisons plan to pedal the same distance as Aytan on an exercise bike as part of a group effort, and hope to get customers involved.

The Venue gym, Elstree Way, has lent a bike for the day, and it is hoped the store will be able to borrow another for the event.

All money raised will be donated to the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Aytan added: “Although our store charity is Sue Ryder, I’ve chosen to raise money for Great Ormond Street for more personal reasons.

"My youngest son was in their hospital for about a week when he was three as he suffered with breathing difficulties.

"They were really good and we were all able to stay on the site with him which was fantastic.”

The event in store will be held on May 17 and will run from 9am to 4pm.

“The staff are really looking forward to it, and some have even gone out to buy silly costumes for the event. We all just hope we can raise as much money as possible for the charity.”
