A new 20,000 seat stadium in Borehamwood would be a "tremendous asset" to the area, according to the chief executive of Hertsmere Borough Council.

Brief details in the agenda for a Hertfordshire County Council meeting suggest the mooted stadium could include indoor and outdoor training facilities and is thought to be planned for Rowley Lane.

A 200-bed hotel and associated conference facilities have also been included in the scheme, labelled the North London Stadium.

The plans were released in the agenda for the county council’s highways and waste management committee meeting, which is due to be held on May 13, as part of the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) strategic economic plan.

Hertsmere Borough Council said it was approached about a potential sports facility for the area six years ago, but the plans did not materialise.

The council has now made a bid for investment to the Hertfordshire LEP – a partnership between local authorities and businesses that decides what priorities for investment should be in the area.

Hertsmere said it aimed to ensure that there is suitable infrastructure in place to maintain traffic flow and protect quality of life in the area if the development was to go ahead. No planning application has yet been received by Hertsmere, which would have final say over the approval of the scheme.

Donald Graham, chief executive of Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “We have had several meetings with leading players in the industry regarding this potential development, as we considered that there was scope to discuss this opportunity with those that we understood were keen to develop such facilities in this area.

“We are very keen to secure sustainable employment opportunities for the borough and believe this exciting project could deliver both top quality professional sports and community facilities that would be a tremendous asset for the area.”

But the council said it could not provide any further details at this time regarding where the proposals have come from or who is behind them.

Hertfordshire County Council said it could not comment on the plans and was only considering them in relation to the potential traffic and waste management issues.

Mr Graham added: “Discussions are at a very early stage and there are no detailed plans. However, as a council we want to make every effort to bring such a prestigious opportunity to Hertsmere.”

Speculation over social media has linked the new stadium to Boreham Wood FC and rugby clubs London Wasps and Saracens, who have only this season moved into their new stadium at Allianz Park.

A spokesman for Wasps said they could not confirm or deny their connection to the stadium, while Boreham Wood FC were unavailable for comment.
