Plans for a 20,000 seat stadium in Borehamwood

Plans to build a 20,000 seat stadium in Borehamwood have been discovered in Hertfordshire County Council's agenda for highways and waste management.

The stadium is due to include indoor and outdoor training facilities and is thought to be planned for Rowley Lane, Borehamwood.

A 200-bed hotel and associated conference facilities have also been included in the scheme, labelled the North London Stadium.

The plans have been released in the agenda for the highways and waste management committee meeting on May 13 as part of the Local Enterprise Partnership Strategic Economic Plan.

Hertsmere Borough Council has been approached about the potential sports facility for the area and has made a bid to the Local Enterprise Partnership, which the county council is considering in relation to its potential impact on traffic.

Hertsmere said its aim was to ensure that there is suitable infrastructure in place to maintain traffic flow and protect quality of life in the area, were such a development to go ahead.

Cath Shepherd, communications manager at the borough council, said: "We are regularly approached by businesses who are looking for space to establish themselves within Hertsmere and we welcome such approaches as we are keen to attract further business and employment to the area.  Indeed, we were approached regarding potential plans for a stadium on this particular site around six years ago which did not materialise.

"Any plans for such a development are in their very early stages and no planning application has been received.  Naturally, once any firmer plans are in place we will consult with stakeholders and residents to ensure everyone has their say regarding how this matter should progress."

Be really good if it did happen - think of the extra income into the area. It would be a good move - especially since it's got easy access to the A1

It's us at Hertsmere Borough Council that are involved with this and here is our position: having been approached regarding a potential sports facility for the area we have made a bid to the Local Enterprise Partnership which Hertfordshire County Council is considering in relation to its potential impact on traffic.

Our aim in submitting the bid is to ensure that we have a suitable infrastructure in place to maintain traffic flow and protect quality of life in the area, were such a development to go ahead.

While the prospect of a 20,000 seater stadium for Boreham Wood would be most welcome both socially and economically, once again we require to consider in great depth the existing infrastructure and the impact this developement will have on the quality of life for the people who live in this town.
Prior to any expenditure by Hertsmere Borough Council on highly expensive urban planning consultants to scrutinise these proposals on their behalf, the people who reside within precinct of the proposed location of this stadium require to consulted.
This may be in the form of a public meeting publicised in the local press, advertised on notice boards around the town and hand delivered to those living within close proximity of the location as determined by the existing planning criteria.
The on-line comments made regarding the future of a replacement Ark Theatre are equally relevant with the recent admission by Councillor Harvey Cohan, thanks to determination of Lawrence Stack now a UKIP candidate who deserves the credit for flushing out the truth, who finally admitted in this newspaper that what he said may not be what he actually meant regarding a replacement theatre?
