A former parent has unveiled their artwork for Parkside School’s new building.

Father-of-three Paul Ballard has been a parent at the Aycliffe Road school of around 15 years, with his youngest son leaving last year.

Previously employed by Elstree Studios to work on scenery, Paul now works full time as a fine artist but has taken time out of his busy schedule to work on two pop-art paintings for the school’s new building.

Paul said: “I just thought ‘let’s put something educational up that is going to inspire them’. I’ve been a parent at the school for many years and just wanted to give something back.”

The paintings feature past and present pop stars and Paul hopes they will educate children on music.

“Education is about asking questions, which is what I hope these painting will make the children do. Pop art is very bright, so you can see it from a distance, but kids can really relate to it.

“The school and the children have inspired me and I hope my work will do the same to them. It’s all about the kids in the end.”

The eight extra classrooms at the school were officially opened by deputy mayor for Hertsmere Councillor Carey Keates in September last year.

Named after long-standing governor David Smith, the building was designed for pupils in Key Stage 2 after the school’s expansion into two forms.

Julie Muncey, headteacher, said she was very pleased with the final result. She said: “We’re really proud of our new building and these paintings will make such a difference. They look absolutely fantastic together and I’m sure the children will really enjoy them.”
